This young lady graduated in 1933 from Stanton High School, a historically African American institution in Jacksonville.  Eva Cobb Lamar is the mother of Marsha Phelts, a popular First Coast historian.  In 2003, Mrs. Lamar attended the seventieth reunion of her graduating class!  As the Florida Times-Union indicated, the average age of the children of the alumni was about 70 years old.  Twelve of the nineteen remaining class members appeared at the gathering, and two teachers also turned out.  One instructor was in her late 90s and the other 100.

Stanton was a place where history was made.  One of the most famous Jax natives was an African American principal of the school, James Weldon Johnson.  As he served as the Stanton's chief, he and his brother Rosamond wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing." They penned the song in commemoration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday in 1900, and five hundred Stanton students could claim the honor of being the first to sing it.  This revered work has become known as "The African American National Anthem."
