  • FLORIDA MUSEUM OF MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH -- Info about a new museum in Jacksonville.  Opened in November, 2002.  Is located in the historic State Board of Health building on Pearl Street.  Info is from a Florida Times-Union article entitled "Old Board of Health Building Opens as Museum," by P.   • HISTORY OF JAX HOSPITALS -- Info about Jacksonville's hospital history   can be found in the book History of Jacksonville Florida and Vicinity 1513 to 1924 (by T. Frederick Davis, 1925).  Go to pages 424-428 .  The entire book is online at the website for the Florida Heritage Collection.  STEP #1 -- When you get to the website, use a keyword search for the following words: "Jacksonville" "vicinity". This will retrieve the book.  STEP #2 -- Click on the link "Electronic resource (JPEG)."  This will retrieve the screen that allows you to choose a page number. STEP #3 -- Go to the bottom of the screen & select a page number.  This will open the book at that page.

  • BOARD OF HEALTH, 1911 -- "Annual Report of the Board of Health for the Year..." (Reports from the Jacksonville Board of Health.  Is from 1911.) -- NOTE:  The entire text of this source is available online.  It's provided in the wonderful website called the "Florida Heritage Collection," maintained by the State University System of Florida.   When you get to the website, you can search by keywords.  Just type in "Jacksonville," or "Duval County," or other keywords, such as words from a title.  ALSO NOTE: Most of the individual Jacksonville items in the Florida Heritage Collection are listed in JacksonvilleStory.com, the site you're now in.

  • BALDWIN, ABEL SEYMORE -- Florida Times-Union article entitled "From our past: A doctor of many talents coaxed a young Jacksonville," by Leni Bessette and Louise Stanton Warren.  Provides info about the Jacksonville namesake of Baldwin, a town in Duval County.  Dr. Baldwin proved very influential in Jacksonville's early growth.

  • BALDWIN, ABEL SEYMORE -- Florida Times-Union article entitled "Woman traces her lineage to Baldwin: Deep local roots," by Mary Maraghy.  Tells about Orange Park resident Harriet Holmes Raffo, who has traced her family history to Abel Seymore Baldwin.

  • DELANO, JANE -- Info about Jane Delano, the founder of the American Red Cross Nursing Service.  From Britannica.com.  BACKGROUND INFO:  Delano spent time in Jacksonville during the horrific yellow fever epidemic of 1888.   She served as the superintendent of nurses at a local hospital, where she proved very innovative.  For instance, she insisted on the use of mosquito netting although it was not yet known that mosquitoes carried yellow fever.
