• HOTELS -- HISTORY IN GENERAL -- Info about the hotel history of Jacksonville  can be found in the book History of Jacksonville Florida and Vicinity 1513 to 1924 (by T. Frederick Davis, 1925).  Go to pages 486-495.  The entire book is online at the website for the Florida Heritage Collection.  STEP #1 -- When you get to the website, use a keyword search for the following words: "Jacksonville" "vicinity". This will retrieve the book.  STEP #2 -- Click on the link "Electronic resource (JPEG)."  This will retrieve the screen that allows you to choose a page number. STEP #3 -- Go to the bottom of the screen & select a page number.  This will open the book at that page.

• ILLUSTRATED HOTEL NEWS -- "Illustrated Hotel News" (published in Jacksonville, 1885) is either is or will be available online in its entirety.  It is being provided by the Florida Heritage Collection.

• DOWNTOWN HOTELS -- Info & pictures for several historic hotels in downtown Jacksonville.  From the ambitious web page "The Architecture of Downtown Jacksonville."

• EVERETT -- "The Everett, Jacksonville, Florida" (promotional item from a hotel) either is or will be available online in its entirety.  It is being provided by the Florida Heritage Collection.

• GEORGE WASHINGTON HOTEL -- Florida Times-Union article entitled, "'Twas a Grand Time for a Grand Hotel," by Bill Foley. Tells about the construction of the George Washington Hotel in the 1920s.

• GEORGE WASHINGTON HOTEL -- "Florida Hotel George Washington..." (Guidebook from 1929) -- NOTE:  The entire text of this source is available online.  It's provided in the wonderful website called the "Florida Heritage Collection," maintained by the State University System of Florida.  When you get to the website, you can search by keywords.  Just type in "Jacksonville," or "Duval County," or other keywords, such as words from a title.  ALSO NOTE: Most of the individual Jacksonville items in the Florida Heritage Collection are listed in JacksonvilleStory.com, the site you're now in. 

• MARTHA WASHINGTON HOTEL -- Info & picture of Martha Washington Hotel, which once was exclusively for women.  From JacksonvilleStory.com.

• ROBERT KLOEPPEL, HOTEL MAGNATE -- Florida Times-Union article entitled "Millennium Moment: Dec. 15, 1951," by Bill Foley.  Tells about Robert Kloeppel, who was one of Florida's leading hotel owners during the early 1900s.  BACKGROUND INFO: Among other hotels, Kloeppel built the George Washington Hotel in Jacksonville in 1926. 

• ROBERT KLOEPPEL -- Florida Times-Union article called "Forgotten Famous," by Colleen Steffen.  Describes several famous people who were associated with Jacksonville.  Includes Robert Kloeppel.

• ROOSEVELT HOTEL FIRE -- Florida Times-Union article entitled "1963 Roosevelt Hotel Fire Seared in Rescuer's Memory," by Robert C. Sorensen. Tells about the catastrophe that killed 22 people in downtown Jacksonville.
