MYSTERY PHOTO: WILDCAT HUNTERS

(Source of picture: Florida State Archives)

These hunters show off three wildcats that the dogs no doubt treed.  The place is identified as Jacksonville, and the photo was taken on May 8, 1937.  Who were the sportsmen?  And where in the Jax area were their hunting grounds located?  According to the Florida State Archives, the photographer was Jack Spottswood.

The United States was still mired in the Great Depression when this picture was snapped.  Other events also made Times-Union headlines in 1937: The pilot Amelia Earhart vanished, the zeppelin Hindenburg crashed & burned, Humphrey Bogart appeared in seven movies, and officials dedicated the Golden Gate Bridge.

As for the funny pages that year, how many of the following comics have you read?  The top ten comics for 1937, beginning with the best loved, were these:  (1) Little Orphan Annie, (2) Popeye, (3) Dick Tracy, (4) Bringing Up Father, (5) The Gumps, (6) Blondie, (7) Moon Mullins, (8) Joe Palooka, (9) Li'l Abner, and (10) Tillie the Toiler.
