History of
Mayport, Florida. From the website for the City of
Jacksonville Beach. BACKGROUND INFO: The community of
Mayport is
located at the mouth of the St. Johns River in Duval County.
During the
early 1800s, Mayport was known as "Hazard" due to the dangerous,
ever-shifting river channel. After the building of a large
sawmill, it
became known as "Mayport Mills" in approximately 1849. (This
