DAVIS AT KINGS ROAD
(Source of image: Florida State Archives)
In 1941, this photo was taken on the same day as the other view of Davis Street & Kings Road. Notice how the black car is parked in the identical spot in both scenes. Clearly visible under the vehicle are the bricks in Davis Street.
Several black residents can be seen walking past, for La Villa had traditionally been an African American neighborhood.
One of the billboards on Kings Road advertises Camel Cigarettes. During the early Fifties, the empty lot containing the billboards was the site of a lumber dealer. Today, the location contains a service station that sits across from the west end of the FCCJ Downtown Campus.
Barely seen in the
distance is a sign for Jax Beer, which used to be a local favorite. The
advertisement was on the side of a restaurant owned and operated by an African
American, Watt Moore. He also lived there with his wife, Ann.
