This old Jacksonville photo raises several questions: Just what happened to the smashed-up car? Were its occupants able to walk away from the wreck? And what's the story on the jalopy in the background?
The
photo dates from April 23, 1948. The two-tone, black & white
vehicle has song lyrics and musical notes painted on it. Maybe
this is the explanation: During the time period, boys who owned
cars often drove such outdated vehicles as Model T's. Sometimes,
they would jazz up their rides with slogans ("23 Skidoo," "Kilroy was
here," etc.), cartoon characters, and other snappy touches like
checkerboard patterns. Was the old clunker in the picture once
the pride & joy of a River City teen?
