THE CEMETERY

Too bad the picture taker wasn't faster on the draw! He could have captured a close-up of this ancient automobile rolling through Evergreen Cemetery. It chugged past one of the tour groups led by Jax historian Leni Bessette. For a few seconds, you could imagine the memorial park as it must've appeared to visitors 75 or 80 years ago -- Not that some parts of Evergreen have changed all that much over time, though.
Along with writer Louise Stanton Warren, Mrs. Bessette co-authors a fascinating Jax history column in the Florida Times-Union. Their characters have included a dynamic minister, a condemned killer, a Confederate general, and an ostrich farm parachutist.
