   A FORGOTTEN GENERAL STORE?

They might have been small, but they were usually packed full: General stores carried a variety of merchandise, from milk & paint to toys & tools.  According to the Florida State Archives, this scene comes from a Jacksonville general store of the 1920s.  But what was its name?  Where was it located?

 

 

 

 

 

 

The men in the picture may've been employees.  Boxes and cases crowd the walls from floor to ceiling, with cigars on a counter in the foreground and a back sign that reads "Candy Department." 

 

 

 

 

 

Such businesses as Eckerd and Walgreen function sort of like modern-day general stores.  However, yesteryear's establishments often provided an even wider selection of products.
