These wooden-shoed diary quadruplets tended to a Kraft Caramel display in 1949. The candies went for for 33 cents, or about $2.40 in current money. The exhibit's location was a Daylight Supermarket in Jax.
What's that hulking figure in the background? It looks as if the store offered another merchandise display. The character is overly dressed to be the Jolly Green Giant, and the head doesn't look quite right for Frankenstein.
For little kids in particular, supermarket exhibits can prove fascinating. The website manager of JacksonvilleStory.com, Glenn Emery, grew up in Ocala, Florida, during the 1960s. When Glenn was about five, a local Publix presented a number of really elaborate displays, most with moving parts. In a town that received only four TV stations and during a time that didn't offer any video games or personal computers, these supermarket scenes seemed almost magical.
