This undated photo depicts boarding houses in La Villa, a traditionally African American neighborhood just west of downtown. An ancestor of the website manager of JacksonvilleStory.com lived in La Villa around the time of the Great Fire of 1901. This ancestor, a white man, worked in the Times-Union printing press room, and he resided either in a boarding house or a rooming house.
