  A STROLL IN THE PARK

PICTURE ABOVE -- Note the large homes with dark red roofs in front of the dock:  This site is now occupied by modern high-rise condos or apartments.  Postmarked October 23, 1934, this postcard depicts Memorial Park, with Winged Victory in its fountain in the foreground.  This view is looking northward, probably from a window at Park Lane Apartments.  The same perspective today would show bigger park trees, in spite of heavy damage from high winds a few years ago.

The website manager for JacksonvilleStory.com visited Memorial Park one sultry Sunday night in September 2003.  There was a smattering of people who lounged on the benches, enjoying the park's peace, or who stood on the waterfront sidewalk, casting into the river.  The air was rather thick with the smell of salt from the water, while the dominant sound was the gentle lap of waves against the concrete bulkhead.  Lit up from lights at its base, Winged Victory served as the centerpiece of the park.

PICTURE ABOVE -- This Winged Victory postcard comes from around 1940, and it looks to the south.  Park Lane Apartments proved to be Riverside's first high-rise structure when it opened in 1926.  It contains condos today.
