This peaceful newborn looks adorable! (But then again, what newborn doesn’t?) The unidentified midwife in the white uniform is checking on the baby and its mother. This Duval County image comes from July 26, 1948. During that year, Harry Truman was president, the nation of Israel was founded, and the Berlin Airlift began. Hard to believe that the little person in the picture might now be great grandfather.
Many an expectant mother has relied on a midwife during her pregnancy. A midwife is a person, usually a woman, who is skilled or trained in the delivery of infants. Historically, midwives haven’t held medical degrees, and their services have usually cost less than those from physicians. The proponents of midwifery laud this and what they perceive as being been other advantages. In years past, for example, midwives have assisted those who often haven't had ready access to doctors. Their most numerous clients have included African Americans. For additional info, CLICK HERE for midwifery links from About.com.
