FROM A NATIVE DAUGHTER
This photo comes from November 22, 1963. Why might this date sound familiar? As a River City native, Nancy Faircloth-Whittemore, wrote to JacksonvilleStory.com, "I have found a picture taken when I played my first violin solo at the Friday Musicale in Jacksonville (the night of President Kennedy's assassination). I was eleven years old, and there had been speculation the concert might be cancelled. But, instead, it went off without a hitch."

GOING BACK IN TIME ~ When Mrs. Faircloth-Whittemore first visited JacksonvilleStory.com, the website opened the floodgates of nostalgia. As the proud native daughter explained...
“Being born in the old St. Lukes Hospital, educated in our public schools, and being a part of our community has provided me with invaluable memories. I grew up in Springfield/North Jax, across from Andrew Jackson High, on 30th Street. My experiences were rich, ranging from participation in the talent shows at Brentwood Elementary, to being chosen the ‘most talented’ at Kirby-Smith Junior High, to serving as Miss Andrew Jackson during my senior year. This is my town -- I've lived here as a child, teen, and young adult. And I even married another ‘local.’
Jacksonville is a town of tradition. We are all connected. I love my home and its landmarks: the five o'clock whistle (Big Jim)... the smell of the paper factory, the Sunbeam Bakery, and the Maxwell House Coffee plant… football games at the Gator Bowl (it will always be the Gator Bowl to me)… Channel 7 Educational Television... the Little Theater in San Marco… the Alhambra Dinner Theater... and dinners at the Sea Turtle and La Château! What a wonderful life!
Thank you, Jacksonville, for making me your
daughter! You were so good to me!
