Like a metallic mirage, this glistening soda fountain beckoned shoppers from what appears to be an art department. The stands in the foreground seem to hold pictures and shadow boxes for 25 cents each (or about $2.25 in today's money). This was a scene at a Kress 5 & 10 Store in Jacksonville in 1947, a couple of years after World War II. Unlike during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Americans now had money to spend, even for their sweet tooths.
