"Pahuska" used to be the most squirrelly resident in the Jax community of Arlington. This photo was snapped August 15, 1947. It shows Pahuska whispering into the ear of his owner, an Arlington artist.
Like Rocky from "Rocky and Bullwinkle," Pahuska was a member of the elusive flying squirrel family, which swings through the treetops at night. He was found as a helpless baby, having fallen out of his nest before learning to fly solo. Fed with an eye dropper, the nutty little guy developed a real fondness for humans.
Speaking of flying squirrels named "Rocky," another little nut from the Jax area was Rocky, who belonged to Bill Goss of Orange Park. He starred in Mr. Goss' book There's a Flying Squirrel in My Coffee. This work reveals how Rocky helped Mr. Goss overcome cancer. The widely-acclaimed author is a motivational speaker and has piloted Navy spy planes. He calls himself "The Luckiest Unlucky Man Alive," the title of another of his inspirational books. Mr. Goss has survived everything from cancer to mine cave-ins, from auto accidents to airplane smashups. Oh, yes, there was also a near-drowning headfirst in a bathroom sink.
