JAX CURIOSITIES: TRAINING GREENHORNS

In 1948, the upcoming drivers of big rigs practiced just as drivers do today.  The vehicle in the photo, a Driver Training Laboratory, may've been furnished by the Florida State Department of Education.

The Barton Company was a Jacksonville dealer in trucks, tractors, farm machinery, and grove equipment.  Its sleek, art deco-style building was located at 1205 West Forsyth Street.  This was near today's Prime Osborn Convention Center, close to the off-ramp of the present-day Forsyth Street exit from I-95.  The company's owner was Quinn Barton, who lived on Edgewood Avenue in Avondale.
