JAX CURIOSITIES:  LOADING A TIRE

(Source of picture: Florida State Archives)

Here's an April, 1948, snapshot of an African American man at work in Jacksonville.  "Drive In or Phone Us," advertised the Pruitt Tire Company.  The worker in the photo may've been going to give curbside surface for a flat.  For more info, see below.

Pruitt Tires made its home in La Villa at 630 West Adams Street.  M. Webb Pruitt established the tire company in February, 1925.  He was born & raised in Georgia and was a 1912 graduate of the University of Virginia.  Pruitt's venture quickly grew into one of Jacksonville's leading wholesale/retail vendors of tires.  In the late Forties, the owners of the business were M. Webb Pruitt, Mrs. Ruth L. Pruitt, and John C. Othen.
