JAX CURIOSITY SHOP:  BAKERY TRUCK

(Source of picture: Florida State Archives)

Boy, this is a neat old truck!  But what did An-Jo stand for?  The names of the owner's daughters, Annie and Josephine.  Probably dating from the 1920s, this photo depicts one of numerous delivery vehicles for An-Jo Bakery.  The company's proprietor was Mr. J. B. Thorpe.  This Georgia native moved to Florida in about 1920 and established his wholesale/retail venture in about 1922.  Thorpe was not an experienced baker himself, but he ran the business aspects of the venture.

An-Jo was located in the Brooklyn/north Riverside area at 301-309 Forest Street.  This wasn't too far west of the present-day Blue Cross & Blue Shield building.

The bakery bragged about its products, "Just smell, then taste -- Not a crumb will go to waste."  Of course, though, many calories would go to the waist!
