Coming from from June 15, 1953, this photo depicts the Northbank to the west of the Main Street Bridge.  The green arrow marks the approximate spot of today's CSX Building, while the blue arrow shows the future site of Times-Union Performing Arts Center.  The red denotes the site of the present-day Jacksonville Landing marketplace, and the yellow points to the St. James Building (City Hall), which once contained "The Big Store," Cohen's Department Store.

By the way, what was happening on this day in 1953?  The USS Princeton launched 184 sorties, establishing a single-day Korean War record for offensive sorties flown from an aircraft carrier.  The next month, the conflict finally came to an end after an armistice was signed by the U.S., China, and North Korea.  Serving in the war was the late Robert S. Emery, a Marine sergeant and the father of the JacksonvilleStory.com website manager.  Sergeant Emery lived in a freezing tent while he serviced helicopters at a Korean base.  It was during this conflict that the military first used choppers to transport wounded Americans.  These circumstances were played up in the movie and TV show "M*A*S*H."
