  • AFRICAN AMERICANS & THE ST. JOHNS RIVER -- Florida Times-Union article entitled "Before the Rails, Rivers Were the Roads," by Bob Phelps.  Tells about the St. Johns River during & after the Civil War.  Concentrates on African American history.  BACKGROUND INFO: Many slaves escaped escaped to the Union gunboats that patrolled the St. Johns.  After the war, moreover, most of the pilots who steered the steamboats were African Americans.
