  • DETAILED FLORIDA TIMELINE -- Covers Florida & Caribbean history.  Focuses on the history of African Americans, Native Americans, and other minority & cultural groups.   Is part of the excellent website called "Myths and Dreams: Exploring the Cultural Legacies of Florida and the Caribbean."  Prepared by The Jay I. Kislak Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the Historical Museum of Southern Florida.

  • EARLY HISTORY OF FLORIDA -- "Florida Historical Pageant Official Program, Presented at Jacksonville, Florida, April 20, 21, 22, 1922" -- (An outline of Florida's early history.  Is from 1922) -- NOTE:  The entire text of this source is available online.  It's provided in the wonderful website called the "Florida Heritage Collection," maintained by the State University System of Florida.  When you get to the website, you can search by keywords.  Just type in "Jacksonville," or "Duval County," or other keywords, such as words from a title.  ALSO NOTE: Most of the individual Jacksonville items in the Florida Heritage Collection are listed in JacksonvilleStory.com, the site you're now in.

  • FLORIDA HERITAGE COLLECTION -- Wonderful website that provides hundreds of Florida & Jacksonville books online in their entirety.  NOTE: Many of the Jacksonville books in the Florida Heritage Collection have been indexed in JacksonvilleStory.com

  • FLORIDA HISTORY INFO -- From "The Florida Story: A Television Documentary," by the Florida Public Broadcasting Service. 

  • "FLORIDA FACTS & HISTORY" -- Includes info about the state flag, symbols, governors, the Seminole Indians, the Civil War, and the name origins of cities & counties.  The site is maintained by the State of Florida.

  • QUICK LOOKS AT FLORIDA HISTORY -- Listen to an audio report entitled "Quick Looks at Florida History." Tells about an effort to entertain as well as inform about Florida's history .  Provided by the Florida Humanities Council.  NOTE: When you get to the webpage, click on the heading "Last Month's Programs."  Keep clicking this heading until you get to the page that contains the audio report you want. 

  • MISCELLANEOUS INFO  -- Website that states that it will post various articles about Florida's history.  Called "Florida for Families."

  • VARIOUS FLORIDA TOPICS (IN AUDIO) -- Info about a variety of Florida topics, from racism to rivers.  The info is in the form of audio info, not the form of on-screen text.  Furnished by FHC (Florida Humanities Council) Radio.

  • FLORIDA LITERATURE -- "Florida Literature: A Select Bibliography."  A list of dozens of books about Florida & its people.  Includes autobiographies, poems, historical fiction, & science fiction.  A lot of work has gone into this site.  

  • VARIOUS CULTURE GROUPS IN FLORIDA -- A list of online essays that focus on how cultures have interacted in Florida.  Emphasis is on Native American & African American cultures.  Part of  project called "Myths and Dreams: Exploring the Cultural Legacies of Florida and the Caribbean," prepared by The Jay I. Kislak Foundation, Inc., in cooperation with the Historical Museum of Southern Florida.

  • VARIOUS ORIGINAL FLORIDA RECORDINGS  -- This amazing web site allows you to play Florida recordings that were made during the 1930s & 1940s.  Rehear lullabies & "jook songs," track-laying chants & children's jingles, quitting time hollers & fish vendor cries, and much, much more.  Furnished by the Library of Congress.  HERE'S AN EXAMPLE:  Two recordings are from a blind African American singer who grew up in South Jacksonville.  She recalled a sermon & chant that were used by children playing church.  The title of her recordings are "Children's Sermon."  NOTE:  When you get to the web site, you can search in several ways, including by keyword & by geographic location.   KEYWORD SEARCHES: Use such terms as "Jacksonville," "Duval County," or any other words you choose to type in.  GEOGRAPHIC SEARCHES:  For Jacksonville recordings, review the following categories: "Jacksonville," "Duval County," "Clara White Mission," "Dyal-Upchurch Building," "Federal Music Project Office," "Home of Mrs. Isabel Barnwell," "Mayport, Florida," and "Shrimphouse." 

  • FLORIDA AUDIO REPORTS: VARIOUS TOPICS -- Listen to reports about a plethora of Florida history topics.  These range from trolleys & sheriffs to ethnic food & Fort Caroline.  Provided by the Florida Humanities Council. 

  • MOVIES MADE IN FLORIDA -- A variety of online movies that give info about Florida history.   Footage dates to 1898, filmed during the Spanish American War.  Furnished by "Exploring Florida: Social Studies Resources for Students & Teachers." 

  • MOVIES FROM FLORIDA HISTORY -- Several dozen film clips shot in the Sunshine State.  Includes a 1914 Confederate reunion in Jacksonville, a silent comedy scene starring "Babe" Hardy in Jacksonville, a race riot in St. Augustine, a wrestling match with an anaconda in Silver Springs, & a color film from WWII showing troop training at Wakulla Springs.  Placed online by the State Archives of Florida.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL, AGRICULTURAL, & NATURAL HISTORY -- List of library, archive & map collections with historical material on the environmental, agricultural & natural history of Florida.  According to the website, "This material includes books, maps, aerial photographs and images, ... materials of interest to the study of the Florida environment, ecology, agriculture, natural resources, plants, animals and other biotic characteristics."  List provided by the Florida Biotic Information Consortium.
