FORT MOSE

 

 

  • FORT MOSE -- An excellent history from the Fort Mose Historical Society. Also provided are links to other websites about the fort. BACKGROUND INFO: The remains of Fort Mose are located in St. Johns County, north of the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine.  Fort Mose was established in 1738.  It served as a sanctuary for former slaves from the English colonies.  According to the website, the Spanish government gave legal sanction to Fort Mose.  Therefore, it became the first free black settlement to legally exist in what became the United States.
