LOVE SPRINGS ETERNAL ~ It's all shown above: Puppy love, young love, wedded bliss, and a diamond anniversary. These River City photos peek into the dreamy stages of romance.
Let's begin with double dating to the Spring Dance at Bolles Military Academy. The picture might come from the 1930s or '40s, judging by similar images at the Florida State Archives. Bolles Military Academy opened in the former San Jose Hotel in 1933. The institution continued as a military academy until 1961, when it became a boys' prep school. In 1971, it turned coeducational.
The portrait of the Navy man & his girl comes from World War II, or July 26, 1942, to be precise. Depicted is "Mr. Hurst's son," according to the Florida State Archives.
The angling couple appears to be relaxed and at peace. The fishing hotspot was at the jetties, which guard the mouth of the St. Johns River. A photographer captured the pair on a summer's day, July 12, 1936.
Celebrating a diamond anniversary was the senior couple. Married in 1874, they marked their 60th year in 1934 -- They may have looked dour, but they must've been doing something right to stick together so long!
