In the picture above, a lovely recruit is being met by two Air Force officers in Jacksonville. The year was 1953, during the Korean War.
After Desert Storm ended in 1991, the US military lifted its ban on women serving on combat aircraft and vessels. The number of females in the armed forces has since jumped 27 percent. Today, they constitute 15 percent of all active-duty personnel.
