In the decades before and after the 1901 Fire, much of  Downtown was occupied by residences.  Today, this is one of the few remaining houses in the heart of Downtown.  It was built soon after the Great Fire by hardware dealer J. B. Bours, as a replacement for his house destroyed by the fire.  The house is a good example of the late Queen Anne style, typified by its asymmetrical massing, decorative wooden scrollwork, shingles in the gables, and the paneled chimney.  Contributing to the restrained but formal facade are the dentilled cornice, Palladian window in the gable, and Doric columns.  This house is an important reminder of the residential flavor that once existed in Downtown.
