HILDEBRANDT
BUILDING
(First Federal Savings & Loan Building)
300 WEST ADAMS STREET
DATE: 1926-1927
ARCHITECTS: Marsh & Saxelbye
BUILDER: James Stewart &
Company - New York
On August 18, 1926, the Jacksonville Journal reported that
"Another six-story brick and steel office and store building on West
Adams Street was assured today for immediate construction according to
the announcement of W. J. Hildebrandt, capitalist and investor in
Jacksonville . . . for a sum to exceed $500,000. Of special
interest is the fact that the George Washington Hotel is being built by
Robert F. Kloeppel, who is Mr. Hildebrandt's brother-in-law."
(The fourteen-story George Washington was across the street.)
Although the lower facade has been extensively altered, the building is
significant as an example of Marsh's and Saxelbye's commercial
architecture at the zenith of their careers.
