D-15
W. G. TOOMER RESIDENCE
241 WEST ASHLEY STREET *
DATE: 1902
ARCHITECT & BUILDER: Unknown
This is one of the last examples
of the numerous large homes built in Downtown after the 1901 Fire.
Others include the Bours (D-1),
Porter (D-68), Williamson (D-2), and Bexley (D-45)
residences. Wiley G. Toomer, first owner of this Colonial Revival
style house, was the co-owner of the Wilson and Toomer Fertilizer
Company, the largest fertilizer producer in Florida. A comparison
of the original photo (above left) of the house with its present
appearance reveals a striking metamorphosis over the years, including
removal of the two-tier porch, the cantilevered balcony on the side,
and the widow's walk.
*[Moved to 2700 Lake Shore
Blvd. in 1993.]
