Although many turn-of-the-century Springfield residences are similar in format to this one, the Eastlake ornament on the veranda of this house is unusually elaborate.  Each bay of the porch is decorated with a graceful wooden arch, a turned-wood frieze, and a stylized railing.  The converging struts in the apex of the main gable are common elements of late Victorian architecture: the diagonal members are called collar braces; the vertical member below the roof is a pendant; and the small pinnacle on top is a finial.  This house was first listed in the city directory in 1898 as the residence of James B. Rosser, an auditor.
