The
evolution of Springfield is recorded by
houses like this, which was built for Louis Z. Baya, treasurer of the
Citizens
Gas & Electric Co. Springfield was emerging as a popular
residential
neighborhood in the 1890's, and many large Queen Anne style homes were
constructed there. Rich textures and finely detailed wooden trim
characterize their facades, inspired by the Victorian emphasis on
outward
appearance and fashion. After World War II Springfield's status
as
one of Jacksonville's most desirable middle-class neighborhoods began
to
decline. Rooming houses and multi-unit apartments were crammed
into
many of these large residences, and their once stately appearance was
neglected,
abused, and "remuddled." The recent resurgence of appreciation
for
the craftsmanship of the past has produced a revival of
Springfield.
The difficult and painstaking job of restoration that is now underway
on
this house symbolizes the preservation effort throughout this entire
neighborhood.
