SP-12
237 EAST THIRD STREET
DATE: 1886
ARCHITECT & BUILDER: Unknown

An interesting array of Eastlake ornamentation adorns this Queen Anne house.  It is highlighted by decorative porch posts, brackets, and railings as well as a sunburst detail and cross-beam ornaments in the gable.  In 1886 carriage maker and blacksmith John McMurray (see D-48) bought the entire eastern half of Springfield's Block 14, which included two acres from Third to Fourth Streets along Market.  In 1886 he and his wife Martha took out a mortgage for $500 to build this house on East Third Street, and the 1887 city directory shows them residing at this address.
