SP-14
AUGUSTUS A. SMITH RESIDENCE #2
51 EAST THIRD STREET
DATE: ca. 1902
ARCHITECT & BUILDER: Augustus A. Smith
According to city directories, Augustus A. Smith moved to this house from the one next door (SP-13) between 1902 and 1903. It was presumably built at that time, since it does appear on the 1903 Sanborn Map but does not appear on the 1897 edition. Smith's granddaughter, who was married in this house, notes that the family moved to this smaller home because Smith "got tired of [his wife's] relatives spending every summer, visiting them." Smith personally selected every piece of lumber used in the building of this house.  The porch originally was a small two-story pavilion at the main entrance.  By 1913 the large one-story wraparound veranda was added, complete with lathe-turned spindles and curved brackets.  The patterned shingles in the gables add to the textural richness of this Queen Anne design.
