DATE: ca. 1886
ARCHITECT & BUILDER: Unknown

This large frame house shows characteristics of three common Victorian styles: Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, and Stick styles.  The diagonal braces on the porch posts and exposed brackets supporting the gable roof show the influence of the Stick style, although stickwork per se is absent.  Gothic Revival overtones are expressed in the oversized gable trim, curvilinear vergeboards, and the steeply pitched roofline. The general asymmetry and variety of textures are Queen Anne traits.  John J. Conniff, a lumber inspector, was first listed at this location in the 1887 city directory.  Few nineteenth-century houses like this are still intact in Springfield, and their preservation is a pressing challenge.
